Black soldiers played a part, for better or worse, in settling the west, or if not settling the west, they helped to extend westward the national policy. The mighty buffalo was an integral part to the survival of the Native American and to impart that attribute upon former slaves showed great respect and indeed in many instances welcomed them in less warlike instances and gave them succor.
