I am guilty of getting to know Josephine
over the distance of seven to eight decades and I know now to my chagrin
that I had smugly misjudged her. My previous impression was that she
used her sexuality as her main reach toward fame and stardom but lo,
the truth be known, that she appears somewhat childlike in her comfort
with her native state. Her usage of that aspect was more a byproduct
of who she was than the whimsical and fresh nature of her character
and her fabulous gifts of dance, song, and acting that made her a true
superstar. As one watches Josephine in the old movies my impression
of her, the respect and affection for her has increased immeasurably
and I see her as truly a star of the first magnitude.
